After remaining dormant for almost half a century Southern Chile's Calbuco volcano has erupted for the second time in a day. Thousands have been evacuated, flights have been cancelled, a state of emergency is in effect, and the pictures/video from this are terrifying.
Volcano lightning?! Thats a thing?! Actually it is. They call them Dirty Thunderstorms either because it involves volcanic plumes or because when you see it you soil yourself.
A study in the journal Science indicated that electrical charges are generated when rock fragments, ash, and ice particles in a volcanic plume collide and produce static charges, just as ice particles collide in regular thunderstorms.
To everyone out there please stay safe. As of posting this article no one has died and I'd love for that to remain true.
